In reply to: ASL (who wants to understand and hold on to anything Harm. Sorry to take you guys/gals from the preview and finale discussions) 's message, "Excuse this ignorant, non military gal. What did General Creswell say after handing Harm his assignment, i.e, after “I hope you like yorkshire pudding.”? I know it was about his promotion and something about O6 rank. They sounded very military to me. What do they mean?" on 23:27:57 04/26/05 Tue

06 is Captain in the Navy, full colonel in all other services. Navy wears FOUR strips on sleeve/ shoulderboards. All other services (and navy on khaki unis/BDU's) wear an eagle. Getting to 06 is a very big deal, particularly right at 20 years like Harm has in. Making it before then is almost unheard of.They also said he would be "frocked" which means he can wear the new rank right away, even though it's not "official' yet--this is kind of an "old" thing and virtually NEVER happens even though it's still on the books (NT) -- CM>^.,.^< basically, he said, "Congratulations, you got promoted, you're out of here and on your way to England.", 12:54:14 04/23/05 Sat

Go here http://www.defenselink.mil/specials/insignias/officers.html#O6 and you'll see all the insignia. Only difference is JAG, Medical and some other completely "staff" officers in the Navy don't wear a star on their shoulderboards/sleeves, they wear the insignia of their profession (ie, millerind for JAGs, caduses for docs, cross/star of david/cresent moon for chaplains). CM, can I ask you a dumb, fanfic-y type question? How do they attach the hard shoulder boards to the summer white uniform shirts? I had thought it was some kind of snap under that gold button, but I don't see how that would work. (NT) -- Dancer - who found that one scene in the conference room facinating for the different "positions" of the shoulder boards., 14:16:39 04/23/05 Sat

If they haven't changed, there are a couple of loops of cloth on the shoulder of the shirt(summer) or jacket (mess dress or dress whites). The shoulder boards have a "strap" underneath that unfastens (snap type thing), feeds through the two loops, and then is re-fastened. The "soft" shoulder boards worn with the winter shirt (under the jacket) are just soft "tubes" of fabric that fit over buttoned epaulets on the shirt. (NT) -- CM>^.,.^<, 14:39:43 04/23/05 Sat

Thanks, CM. I guess after all these years looking at Harm, I'm spoiled. His shoulder boards sit so squarely on his shoulders, I never thought about how they stayed there. It was that scene in conference room that got me wondering. Vuky-baby's boards were half way rolled forward so much, they couldn't stay there by gravity. LOL! (NT) -- Dancer, 14:56:26 04/23/05 Sat

I had a hard time understanding what he said too. However, I think it was something to the effect of "These are the orders we're putting in for you." (NT) -- Julie, 13:00:01 04/23/05 Sat

Just ignore the above post...I misread your question (NT) -- Julie, 13:02:49 04/23/05 Sat

He transferred Harm to the USN JAG Legal Office in London, UK. He referred to it by another name, but I posted some info about the real office down below. Yorkshire pudding is a typical Brittish dessert. Hope this has been useful. (NT) -- Yali V..._ (I guess I'll have to check the reruns of Queer Eye for the Brittish Guy, specifically the American guy in London...), 13:02:50 04/23/05 Sat

Yorkshire pudding is a puffy, sort of big popover thing traditionally served with roast beef. It's not a dessert, but is served instead of (or in addition too) potatoes. (NT) -- CM>^.,.^<, 13:10:12 04/23/05 Sat

Thanks, MamiGato. I stand corrected. :) (NT) -- Yali V..._, 13:38:29 04/23/05 Sat

Words to the effect - The General said it was a Captain's billet and the board results came out and Harm was selected Captain. They would "frock" him to fill the billet. What that means is he wears the O6 uniform, but doesn't get the O6 pay until the effective date of the board is reached (usually Jun or Jul). (NT) -- Teri, 13:26:57 04/23/05 Sat

Thanks everyone for the info. I actually loved those puffy yorkshire pudding myself, having lived in London for 8 years. I just loved the idea of Harm being transferred to London. I do hope he will end up there with Mac by his side. (NT) -- ASL, 13:40:00 04/23/05 Sat
