Subject: Harm being 'whiny' in this ep. I really didn't find him so
In reply to: - 's message, "season eight: Ready or Not, November 12, 2002" on 01:37:36 11/17/02 Sun

I really don't think Harm was whiny, though he was a little childish at the party.

When he confronted AJ about 'why Mac and not me' that was his FJ ego talking. It has been drilled into him since the first day of pilot training that naval aviators are the best, and they ALL believe they are the best of the best. And it never goes away. So for AJ to have picked Mac over him for something like this was an affront, and he wanted to know why. Not saying right, wrong or indifferent, just why I see it that he asked. And I think the two months REALLY bugs him. Even though it may have been because of different boards--different services would meet at different times, most likely--it still is a tiny thorn in his side.

Harmkins is the archtypical alpha male. You either like that type, or not, but he is the total package. INTELLECTUALLY, he is not a chauvanist, he doesn't believe that women are inferior, or need to be protected, or should defer to men.

But MAC isn't women. MAC is HIS woman, whether they have consumated the relationship--both physically and intellectually--or not. That's where his head has been since at least LL, probably before. This is something that is going to flare up more than once, I fear. He is going to want to be 'in charge' and is going to have some difficulties with her independence. He respects her abilities, and grudgingly respects the fact that she doesn't let him get away with much. But I predict it will still be a struggle. They will likely need to have clear areas of authority in a realtionship.

Mac's doing much better at not feeding into it--in some ways, I think Mac has taken Harm down off the pedestal she had put him on, and now really loves him warts and all....she no longer expects him to be perfect like she (perhaps subconciously) did in the past.
