The Good of the Service – Season 3

What It's About

Harm and Mac investigate a Marine Colonel accused of disobeying a direct order by launching a rescue mission in Haiti that goes wrong.

Reasons to Watch – Harm in civvies. Harm in a t-shirt. Harm attempting an Aussie accent. (Shades of things to come. LOL!) This is one of JAG's better courtroom dramas with A.J. serving as defense counsel and butting heads with Harm and Mac as the prosecutors in a high profile case.

Reasons to Tape – This episode introduces Marine Col. John Farrow, a "legend in the Corps" and Mac's former C.O. in Okinawa. In later episodes, we will find out there was more to the story, but for now, he's just the accused. As Harm and Mac conduct their investigation, tensions mount between them and sparks fly when Harm submits a report unflattering to the Colonel. Their confrontation features one of my favorite lines from Harm, "You want to 'power down' and tell me what this is about?"

While the main story centers on the trial and the personal and political consequences of the Marine raid in Haiti, the "B" story centers around the people involved in the trial, particularly Harm and Mac, and how they manage to work their way through this. JAG used to do this so well. My favorite scene is the one in the garden while they are waiting for the verdict to come in, but Mac's conversation with the Admiral at the end of the ep is memorable, too.

If you've never seen this episode, you're in for a treat. It's well-written, thoughtful in places and a good starting point for anyone who needs to know more about the players.
Pull up a chair and watch "The Good of the Service." It'll be good for you, too.
