Subject: Salmon Run

Salmon Run

Sitting on the shoreline mouth of the river Manitou
Given the name of an Indian God for its scenic view
Trees along the shore from the winds are severely bent
Sandbars piled high in the shallows from the tides are lent
Each fall I travel there with my fishing rod in hand
To greet fellow fishermen that together here do band
In quest of the mighty salmon, the king of the deep
That come here to spawn before their eternal sleep
Many will troll the bay during the hours of daylight
For pooled in the deep they wait, keeping out of sight
I await the night for them to start to make their run
Aided buy the wind and tide after the setting of the sun
Into this river mouth in schools they make their way
Finding pebbled bottom upon which their eggs they lay
The females rise from the depths, jumping high into the night
Falling heavily back to water and splash in their delight
They do this to loosen their eggs and ready them to spawn
A dance of propagation to the water's burbling song
At times sheer numbers will turn the waters black
All you see are tails, fins and shiny greenish backs
Now I'm not here to take the life of this noble fish
This is their culmination, in truth it's their dying wish
For once salmon spawn, their life-cycle is complete
Never again will these fish, in life's game compete
The rainbow trout is my quest, as they come to feed
They follow behind the salmon to feast upon their seed
And when caught on line they like acrobats perform
Turning the surface of the water into a raging storm
And if they are brought successfully to the shore
An even more spectacular thrill is for you in store
For their colors and their beauty will hold you in awe
All shades of the spectrum, bright and without flaw
Some polka-dots and freckles on their heads and sides
Sleek and graceful feeders that can race against the tides
Reflected by the fire's light from across the water stare
Many pairs of yellow eyes seemly floating in the air
As gentle deer in darkness come to the river's bank
And quickly return to cover after they have drank
Raccoons salvage shoreline for the salmon that are spent
Using keen sense of smell to follow wind born scent
The stars look down from their home way up on high
And the moon's mirror image on the waters softly lie
If beauty's measure was by pound, this would be many ton
Nature comes to greet me when it's time for the salmon run

Brian
