Date Posted: 17:54:16 06/17/02 Mon Susan drove to DHF, where she would be giving Caitlin's daughter, Amy, her first western lesson. When she arrived, Saddle and her kids were walking through the barn, feeding the horses. When Saddle saw Susan, she said, "Hey Susan! What are you doing here?" Susan laughed. "Hi, Saddle. I'm giving Amy a lesson." Saddle nodded and continued walking along the aisle. Suddenly, Caitlin's Mercedes pulled into the driveway. Amy jumped out and walked into the barn. "Hi, Miss Susan! Who am I riding?" Amy asked excitedly. Susan smiled at the energetic 13 y/o. "You will be riding Boomerang." she replied. "Yay!" Amy yelled and she raced to get the gelding out of the paddock. Susan walked into the tack room and got out all of Amy's western tack. Amy walked into the barn, Boomerang in tow. She hooked him up in crossties and Susan watched as Amy groomed the handsome gelding. Then Susan picked up the western saddle and slid it onto Boom's back. The gelding stood calmly as Susan helped Amy saddle and bridle him. Then they walked out to the ring and Susan gave Amy a leg up. Amy gathered the reins in both hands and kicked. Boom jogged foward, nearly unseating his uncertain rider. "Squeeze the reins. Let your leg down, don't bend quite so much in the knee. Reins in that hand." Susan called, instructing Amy. Now, Amy looked more settled and Boom was walking smoothly foward. Susan told Amy a few more corrections and then said, "Alright, since you have ridden before. I'm going to let you trot. Try to stay in the saddle and relax. I going to hook you up to the lunge line." Susan picked up the lunge line and started Boom walking a circle to the right. "Now squeeze gently." Amy listened and tapped Boom's side with her heel. The gelding jogged easily foward and Amy bounced uncomfortably in the saddle. "Let your legs down and relax into the saddle." Suddenly Amy understood and she sat almost perfectly to Boom's easy jog. Susan smiled and told Amy that was enough for now. They untacked Boom and turned him out, wrapping up Amy's lesson.
