VHS - Abbreviation for 'video home system' a VCR format pioneered by JVC in the 70's.

It's a generic term for a standard videocassette..(in the olden days there was BETA(sony) and VHS(jvc) tapes...beta were smaller and could only play for shorter periods of time...in the late 80's Beta was wiped out by VHS tapes..
BETA formats are still used in film making and TV production)

both PAL and NTSC are called VHS...(then theres SECAM format [VHS as well].but u dont wanna know ;)

no help there...unless the users manual is saying your new VCR will play any VHS type tape,
