I am reminded of the Secret Science books by Max Freedom Long. he mentioned the Huna belief system, according to which, as I remember it, we all have 3 spirits operating in our bodies: 1) The child-kind spirit - I want, I must have, gimme or else, etc., the body-operating part of us, regulating our body's "automatic" operations, including the utilization of food, the regulation, within close limits, of our body temperature, the construction, maintenance and repair functions (e.g. a cut finger), 2) The intellectual function, operating as the overall manager of the body, depending on our environment, interaction with other persons, animals and plants, and 3) a super-intelligent advisory spirit possibly equipped with paranormal abilities, connected with outside spirits, including God. - Nothing about an eternal flame there.
