Subject: Who rules the United States?

 In school we learn that the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court rule the United States as representatives of the general population. The President makes the decisions which affect the lives of every American in the country.
Conspiracy Theorists believe that an elite cabal is working behind the scenes making the important decisions that affect millions of lives. They are the government within the government or the shadow government. Who are they? The special interest groups? The military industrial complex? Big business? The electoral college? Or is it a specific person?
