The following is an article in Mingpao on 9 November 2002, posted here at the request of Ding Ding:

It seems certain that our school will never look the same again but we all hope it's spirit, including this potato stuff, will prevail despite all the changes.

My colleagues, who have kids studying in Pun Yu Wah Yan and who themselves aren't Wahyanite, often complain to me about the appalling academic standard of the teaching staff there.

They will never understand that we never depend much on our teachers for our academic achievements. They will never understand that it's the Wah Yan Potato spirit that we treasure most.

Ashley, I don't know you have this habbit of keeping newspapers clippings about the school. That's an interesting article though I may not agree with it 100%. And maybe you are right that one thing we all treasure most is this 'potato-ness'.

As a matter of fact, I don't.

Your message tells me two things:
1. You don't read your email regularly.
2. You don't read others' posting carefully.

As mentioned in my message, I posted the clipping at Ding Ding's request. He sent that to both of us by email.

Oh, yes you are right. I am still feeling dizzy as I write. Been in the bed since 3:00 in the afternoon. And I read my mail after reading this posting of yours.

I read a newspaper article (Vancouver's MingPao) regarding the Fathers of Wah Yan about 2 months ago. Especially mentioned Fr Mallen, said he retired already, but still frequently stands outside Pun U Wah Yan, watching the students coming in or leaving the schools with smiles. The Wah Yan Fathers are really very kind to and care of us.

Shun I read exactly the same article and I was SO TOUCHED by Father Mallin! He was without a doubt one of the kindest gentlemen I have ever encountered on earth. That's what I call living the examples set by Jesus Christ our Lord.

I might still have the clipping.

As to teachers...hypothetically speaking, would Beethoven became the Beethoven as he was if he was taught by Ujoelly for music or for the same matter can someone became an expert in Chinese if he/she were taught by Fook Chai?!?! Standard of teachers is important to a certain degree but we just don't rely on them totally - I rest my case here!

It was also posted at the PSA page by Mr. K.K. Lam.
