Billyboy, I don't recall that as being the case where a winning team would pick all the losing teams points....That's a new one on me......I remember the point system, and I can give you examples of that system with two state championship teams dating back a ways, but I had not heard of a winning team picking up the losing teams accumulated points.

Billyboy's right on this one. In the old days of three CMass divisions (I played for Northbridge in the 80's and can remember trying to figure what the Super Bowl pairings were going to be), you got 10 points if you beat a team in your division, 12 for one div. higher, 14 for two higher, 8 for one lower, 6 for two lower. In addition, you got 2 points for each of your opponents wins and 1 for each of their ties (I believe that's what it was). So it was worthwhile for Southbridge (which was division II) to play and beat us (Northbridge was Div. III) nearly every year (Except '89! 11-0, baby!! Sorry, had to get that in.) as they would get 8 points for the win plus another 18 if we posted a 9-1 record, for a total of 26 points. It was actually more beneficial for them to play us than a .500 team in their own division, as that win would have netted them only 20 points. Maybe your olden days are older than mine and it was different back then, but either way I do agree, more meaningful championship games would be nice to see.

The rating systems probably have changed many times, and we are left with this Super Bowl "system" that determines nothing except that two good teams play each other in 18 (or more) locations in the state. I don't know why they don't have a playoff system, but I imagine it's because it could drag on for many more games and extend into the winter sports season, but more importantly, it puts the players at further risk of injury, the more games they play. I think that we should get rid of the "A" division teams in Central Mass and have just Divs I, II, III (and maybe a IV for the real small schools like HCHS) which is very reminiscent of the old Class A, B, C, D titles, and do the same for the rest of the state...four divisions....not 12 like they have in Eastern Mass. C'mon....Div 6A??? Have the state broken into four football districts....Wmass, Cmass, NEmass, SEmass, and have a point system determine the best teams in eash of the four divisions. Then the four D1 teams, for example can play a "semi-final" weekend with the the two winners playing for the state championship. That would eliminate a long playoff "season". The most a team would play is two more games after their regular season.
