Keratosis pilaris is a chronic skin condition manifested as raised rough small spiny bumps evenly distributed on the upper arms, thighs or face. It usually first appears in early childhood and can continue into adult life. Some people can also develop red pimples within these areas of affected skin. Most people with keratosis pilaris have fair, sensitive skin. This often is inherited.
Since dry skin is usually associated with keratosis pilaris, it is important to pursue gentle bathing habits. Baths or showers should be brief, avoiding excessively high water temperatures. Fragrance-free soaps (Dove, Cetaphil, Neutrogena) or moisturizing body washes (Oil of Olay) are recommended. The skin should then be gently patted dry with a towel and then a prescription moisturizer product is applied. Slowly, over several weeks, you should notice gradual flattening of the raised bumps and smoother feeling skin.

There is no cure for this condition since it is essentially a manifestation of a certain sensitive skin type. Your skin type cannot be changed. However, with regular daily use of effective moisturizer products and attention to gentle skin care, keratosis pilaris can be effectively controlled.
