Wow, I haven't seen this in 6 years. Gets better every time.

My expectations were so skewed that, initially, I didn't even really like it. It was the sunscreen song at the end that convinced me there was more there.

For posterity's sake, it's interesting to note that I saw it with Meechele. Why? Because she was raised a Baptist. How often do you see them portrayed in films? Well, Spacey and DeVito appreciated their role (and that's why they went out and got an Italian kid to play one).

I've dealt with Baptists my whole life. The ease they have in sharing their judgments with others easily makes them the most offensive people you can imagine. Their lack of education is fun to mock but they do know the Bible. And should one gain some intellectual street cred they are force to be reckoned with. If they can fight then you're in trouble.

At any rate, the movie's plot and characters are what make it great. The dialog is rather weak and the performances too self-aware. But in spite of all that, they're getting at the essentials of life in this country...in this world. Maybe it's supposed to be sloppy.
