Well he was a racist, it's true. The Southerners are meant to represent the Maori (not Persians, as those who only saw the movies knee-jerked), and yes, blonde, skinny white guys the highest among the races. Perhaps the Orc were South Africans.

But while the narrative of Rings has been somewhat rightly criticized for it unwieldy structure, his adeptness at prose is nearly unparalleled. I personally liked Tom Bombadil as a character and that whole section of the book. The Hobbits capture by Wraiths was creepy as shit, and when they finally arrive at Bree, what is really still an unsettling situation seems like a relief in contrast to the fucked up shit they got into and out of barely 30 miles outside the borders of The Shire.

I envy you that you have only just now read them.
