Subject: Having just spent a month in S. Africa and six days at Coomore
In reply to: DKH 's message, "Re: Web Page" on 15:25:19 12/13/10 Mon

I feel compelled to say few words, on a forum I rarely see fit to visit anymore because it's become a bit of one trick pony.

But first let me say, by way of disclosure, that James Brennen is a man I'm proud to call a friend.

Most of what I saw is S. Africa, including the "national show" in
Cape Town was no surprise, big heavy dogs not really fit to DO anything other than look a certain way, mostly locked away, and despite lot's of claims to the contrary I suspect they mostly stay that way, be it on a "farm" or not. A lot of stupid looking animals with nothing behind their eyes.

But I spent a good six days in and around Coomore and what I saw there was not like anything I'd seen anywhere with Boerboels. Aside from the fact the Boerboels were considerably more athletic, generally lighter on their feet, and sharper at attention than the norm, they live for the most part in an actual pack, day and night, same sex adults, young adults and young pups as well in something you'd have to call harmony. And they operate as a pack, a thing that more than once was made very clear to me, as a stranger there.

Dog aggression in Boerboels doesn't get talked much about cause it doesn't sell dogs, but I'd long since accepted it as par for the course; now I'm starting to reconsider that. And I believe James when he says he's been selecting away from it for years.

Now most of us don't have security issues that warrant a Pack of twenty boerboels, but believe me when I say it, without digressing too much into the plight of the white man in modern day South Africa or palpable feeling of danger there, a pack of boerboels is not overkill where a white man is outnumbered 30 to 1 and the govt is slowly trying to takes his guns ( if not his land ) away.

But a boerboel that can get along with other dogs is I think a very real plus to many a dog owner that might like to take his/her dog out and about in their daily lives without constant struggle.

I see in a quick perusal of the forum here that the same old debates and posturing is at play. I've come to accept that everyone is selling something, I'm no exception.

And some may want the boerboel to chase cows and some may want it to protect stock and some to protect their family; but most just want it to make money. That's the reality as i see it.

But when a man charters a private cargo plane to ship all his boerboels from Ireland where he can easily sell dogs to europe at top dollar without the headaches and expenses of quarantine and European import laws back to Africa where it becomes almost not worth the trouble, and he then sells dogs at African prices or gives them away. Then I think it's safe to say that that man's primary motivation in Boerboels is not to make money.

So it is with some degree of disgust that I read the thread below where in Mr. Brennen simply sought the input of people on a forum who for years have ranted against the SABT, the show ring, and all that it entails. Of course EBBASA is in competition with the SABT, so is the USBA, and so someday will be the AKC, by definition they compete for the same pool.

Does that reality belittle EBBASA ? Does it mean they might not be as sincere in their desire to preserve or cultivate aspects of the breed as where those who did so under the USBA's "working" arm ?

I think not. And here I need to address DKH specifically it's puzzling to me in this ocean of turds that is the boerboel breeding world that you seem most inclined to spill your contempt on those least worthy. In a scene where nintey percent are piddlers, overnight breeders, and such you talk down to James Brennen or you pursue Tashi with such vehemence that you throw Norman, who defended your cause and name for years, under the bus to get at her. When reality remains she works her dogs, she's serious about dogs, she's better than probably ninety percent of the boerboel breeders out there that get a pass. Cause why ? You don't like her style of self promotion ?

Tell me who's not self promoting here ? me ? you ? anybody ?

I've defended who I thought needed defending on this forum and more than once it was you. From a crazy 300 lb. cajun with a gun and a badge to rather literate argument from a woman who suggested if Night Train threw demo with the mother of Normans pup he had the traits to throw it with others.

So don't take it as an attack, it would be as foolish of me to do that as it is you to attack Tashi, you're both upper crust in the big picture, much as it pains you to be boxed with her I'm sure, I'll do it just the same to make a point you might not forget :)

My point is this James Brennen, it seems to me, is about as upstanding a breeder and person as I've met in dogs. Now maybe time will prove me wrong, it's always the smart ones that disappoint in the end and certainly I've been disappointed in the past by breeders who I thought really stood for something other than commerce. But if all I can see is tribes protecting their petty little piece of market share, then how does suggesting that motivation for others make them any better ?
