I have owned both. They are very similar in many ways. My Rott was always at my side and eager to please. He loved my constant attention and was easy to train, When exposed to a new environment he would check things out before jumping in. Dog aggressive (if I were present), killed a pit bull in all of about two seconds. Best guard dog ever. No real health issues until he developed diabetes at age 6 and had to be put put down in a matter of days. Almost all of them die of diabetes or cancer in the 3-7 age range.

I picked a Boerboel as my next dog due the similarities and the fact that back then you heard nothing of health issues. I think these are a result of everyone thinking they can be a backyard breeder these days. At any rate my dog is 6 ang has had no health issues. He is very aloof and really doesn't want to be petted a whole lot. He prefers to hang out in the same room as me. Fearful of nothing and will jump into the middle of any situation. A good guard dog who has really turned it on when need be. But, not in the same class as a Rottie. No dog agression except when needed. He killed two Pit Bulls in about a half a second each.

Final notes, before someone ask, I don't fight dogs. I do have a neighbor who keeps pits and they have gotten out and come after both me and my dogs when I was out walking on several occassions. Finally, there are traits that I love about both breeds. I would love to see a professional breeding program using Rotts and BoerBoels.
