I use the Volhard temperament testing system and have this carried out by an ex-police dog trainer. The system is used extensively by the Guide Dogs for the Blind in the UK and also the Police. Testing is carried out in a place the pups are unfamiliar with and by someone they don't know for accurate results. It will grade pups at 49 days and give a guide (not a definitive prediction) to their basic temperament traits. Tests involve, noise sensitivity, touch sensitivity, dominance etc. To me it just gives me a few clues in matching pups to owners i.e. touch sensitive pups don't go to homes with small children.
