Subject: Is every dog at an ATM machine a protection dog? I think not.
In reply to: Sara R 's message, "Re: What is the Boerboel for?" on 20:37:28 05/09/09 Sat

"I've noticed that people are looking for true working dogs in breeders who are breeding the pet equivalent of a protector...not a dog meant to be on a sport field or PP training field...but not a marshmellow either."

The only way to know this is to test it. Most don't. If they wish to state they have PP dogs, then they need to test it. Without testing, one can't claim that. If they claim that...they need to be able to prove it...and certainly should not be offended when asked to do so. If they are offended when asked...then most likely they don't test it.

Just as not every dog that goes to an ATM is not a PP dog, neither is every dog that lives with a family a family guardian. To assume this will make an @$$ out of the owner more often then not...and unfortunately, some times innocent people will suffer if they rely on insufficient deterents.

It is kind of like a 90# woman that enrolls in a Tae Kwon Do class (one of the least practical martial arts today) that thinks she can defend because she passed her black belt test breaking a piece of wood that doesn't test her abilities to really PROTECT. Just having a dog...even a big dog...doesn't mean it can perform when the $hi7 hits the fan.

That is the reality of it. If one doesn't test protection, they shouldn't claim protection dog. If one does test it, they should be willing to show it. It IS that simple.
