Very nicely put Rayna! I have been thinking alot along the same lines recently, evaluating my 3 dogs... who have varying degrees of seriousness in their Guarding of me and my home. *I have 3 boerboels and they start from 1 end of the spectrum and go to the other extreme.
Riddock - extremely laid-back. Gets along well with other animals, people, new places.... nothing phases him. Least protective and wary of people, etc.
Tippy - GREAT combination of both. Can take anywhere, but is wary of strangers with hats/weird attire, and EXTREMELY noisy when we have "guests" on the farm - we NEVER have company, so she Definitely lets us know when someone is here.
Tito - my safety is his LIFE. He is very well behaved, and does not pose a threat to visitors; he usually doesn't even get up from his "sun-bathing" when we have company.... until I walk outside, at which time he is either in front of me, between me and the newcomer, or at my side. However, Taking him out for social calls is a hassle, because he is SO very watchful.... it almost overloads his system. He has to watch EVERY car that passes us as it approaches, passes by, and even driving away. Every dog that barks at us as we drive down the road majorly gets his goat.
When there's too much stimulation, you can see it in his eyes. He can't monitor everyone when we're at my nephew's Little League baseball game or my niece's softball games with children, screaming parents, and chaos.
It's not a weak nerve thing with him.... he's just doing his job; but suddenly he has to protect Mom from this whole strange, loud, crazy world, and that's quite a bit to ask when you're used to a nice, quiet farm.
However that doesn't take away from the amazing Dog and Guardian that he is! B/c if you try and sneak up on us at the house/farm where he's got everything under control; he will take care of business.
