Subject: DNA tests/research

We (The ABC) will have DNA cheek swab kits (parentage) available at our May event in Berryville VA for a reduced rate. If interested, let me know, I need to get a head count and place the order soon.
We will also be having a blood draw to get DNA in the CHIC DNA bank for testing on genetic diseases, we can ask to be put into ongoing research, such as Osteosarcoma and Osteochondrosarcoma or any other research that is going on now, and in 20-30yrs something else in our breed comes up, they will have many generations of DNA in the bank to study, this is the foundation for the breed in this country, and getting DNA banked on any dog is useful, but EVERY dog contributing to the gene pool is really important to bank. We don’t know what we’ll find in the future – good or bad – and we need to have DNA stored now, while we can get it. Then down the road, as things pop up, there is a way to do the necessary research. It’s not for a witch hunt – nobody produces problems on purpose, but “stuff” happens. When mutations are found, if there is DNA banked, dogs can be tested even after they’re gone (again, useful for the foundation dogs, and especially useful for stud dogs with frozen semen stored that will be used in the future). This is very important to the future of our breed, please try to participate. There is a form to fill out and The cost for blood submissions is $20. These are pass through costs, and are paid to the labs for their collection, extraction, and storage services. Owners are encouraged to view the fees as ‘donations’ to canine health initiatives.
