Subject: Piebald, Skewbald or Irish Marked?
In reply to: ann 's message, "Irish marked, not a piebald n/t" on 21:23:10 04/07/10 Wed

Colour terms tend to be a bit confusing, especially when we as a breed don't use the terms generally accepted by the rest of the horse or dog world!

Technically in genetic terms, any dog with white on it is "Irish marked". There are 10 levels of Irish markings from a few white hairs on the chest, toes or muzzle right through to a white dog with a few coloured hairs on the body. So ANY dog with ANY white on it is technically speaking "Irish Marked".

Piebald is a whole lot more confusing as all "Piebalds" are "Irish Marked" but not really Piebalds at all! In horse terms Piebald is used for a white animal more usually marked with BLACK splashes. The brown (or other colour) splashed horse is more often called "Skewbald". So we should really be calling our Piebalds, Skewbalds or just plain Irish marked! I guess the term Piebald was picked up somewhere along the way, maybe got lost in translation somewhere and stuck!

Here's a link to colour definitions by a Piebald and Skewbald Horse Association.
