"IF a breeder has good, healthy boerboels of good working temperament that can be reproduced reliably...would there be any reason to breed outside?"

Yes. For 2 reasons.

1. If the gene pool is limited, one might need to breed outside to another program.
2. Although there are some very nice specimens out there...some near perfect dogs out there, they are rare, and I can't say that I have ever seen a TOTALLY PERFECT line of dogs. A descriminating breeder will be able to recognize not just the strengths, but also the weaknesses within their line. And by weakness I don't mean, "weak." I mean simply an area that could be improved to "raise the bar." A good breeder will know what area(s) they would like to improve upon and when they need an outcross they will select an outcross that brings to the table traits that help strengthen such areas.

All breeders should wish to raise the bar. If a breeder can't see how to raise the bar, well, then it is time for them to retire from breeding IMO...as they have lost eithher their objectivity or their descriminating eye.
