Subject: Training recall....for those of you who have trouble with this

One of the most frustrating things a dog can do is NOT recall when given the cue. I have had more dogs at my place for this than anything I can think of. I used to spend at least a day at shows working with people and their dogs on recall. My belief is you always if possible let the dog do what you ask rather than use compulsion. So how do you get a dog to recall without being told? The answer is surprisingly simple. This method works with new pups of grown dogs. If the dog is grown I have found a smaller more confined area works better free of distraction to start. This way he can't get to far and fall into what I like to call the "ignore zone" lol. Take whatever motivates the dog a treat, toy whatever (I used a plastic drinking bottle on one of our dogs she was highly motivated by the empty bottle so I employed it) whatever gets your dogs drive up will work. Then go out in the yard, field, playground or wherever you are. Let the dog run around sniff and romp a bit and watch him/her closely. Don't say anything verbally because you want ONLY the cue word during the dogs focus. At the moment the dog is running towards you and you are sure they are focused on you. When they are close enough to not be distracted and you know they will come to you. At that instant give the "come" command. The moment the dog posts up in front of you mark with the reward. Sounds simple huh? well it really is. Your actually marking movement not trying to "train" a command. Keep it up and the tighter the dog gets you can begin to slowly introduce distraction. Only do it a few times in a session then move on. You will soon see that the dog amazingly recalls without failure. I hope this helps some of you out there.
Feel free to add your own creativity.
