In alot of cases fear is the leading cause as to why the dog acts agressively. By redirecting the attention and reinforcing the positive nature of the (non threatning situation or person) the dog is learning to not be afraid of the person or situation and can learn to diferentiate between desireable and non desireable behaviors.

I'd much rather redirect the attentionand reward, than to correct the negative behavior as Rayna stated. I've dealt with fear/agressive/unsocialized dogs, having many from diffrent situations and I can say with confidence the method works. The dogs still protect during needed times, but also can socialize and interact in a natural every day non threating situations.
