Subject: Boerboel are NOT Large Breed
In reply to: Nikki 's message, "Re: Which puppy food?" on 06:13:53 06/16/09 Tue

When it comes to dog foods, "large" typically refers to dogs that reach an adult weight of around 80 lbs. Boerboels are a "giant" breed. If you are buying a commercial dog food, look for food labelled for Giant breeds, not large breeds.

If you have the time and don't mind a little extra effort, feed raw instead of kibble. By doing some research - and legwork - it can be the cheapest way to feed and it's the healthiest (if you do it right). My dogs get an extremely varied diet and I pay next to nothing for it. Small grocers and markets, especially ethnic markets, are good for scraps of goat, beef, pork and sheep/lamb, hunters are more than happy to give me their deer and bear remains, and I get all the free fish I can catch. There are some small meat processors within an hours drive of me that I can pick up meat scraps from as well.

If you go the kibble route, follow Nikki's link above and select a good quality food. Your dog may not suffer from being fed cheaper grain based foods - I've had more than one non-Boerboel thrive for twenty or more years on nothing else - but the immediate benefit for you from high quality food is less dog poo in smaller volume, less gas, and less smell. Not a bad thing for dogs this size.
