Experience is one way to recongize a dog person. However, I worked for a very short time at a well known Siberian Husky kennel. They knew their dogs, their pedigrees, were members of the breed club, won Westminster. Been involved for years and years. But I would not say they were dog people. They never interacted with the dogs on a personal level. It was a business. Most of the dogs stayed locked in their kennel runs, all the time. The top dogs stayed in crates inside and were rotated out 4 times a day. That was their life.

Recently, I have started training dogs for another "show" breeder and she is the same way. She knows the pedigrees, her dogs have CH Titles, member of the club, yada yada. But she rarely goes out to the kennel to see the dogs. She has people for that.

I think a TRUE dog person is one that has a close connection with any dog that passes through their hands. A true dog person can recongize any problem with their dog right from the start and will take immediate action to fix it. A person that can train their dogs without having to resort to unfair corrections.

A true dog person only breeds their dogs to improve on what they have, not for profit. They spend hours working, playing or just being with their dogs. A true dog person knows every inch of their dog, and can even tell you about their individual characteristics, as well as their falts and their strengths. Why a dog should or should not be bred.
