I can only speak from my own experiences and do not lay claim to possessing the "answers". I have encountered spirits in many places and under different circumstances. I believe a definition of "contact" needs to be established so that those talking about the phenomena are comparing "apples to apples". I believe spirits chose their encounters with the living. However, I also believe (through my own experiences) that a person can call out to the spirits of a place and be answered. Thus, the individual can initiate the contact. I do not take my encounters lightly and feel "gifted" when contact is made. I will not call out unless I have something to offer. I have been with people who sing quietly and are answered, others sit quietly and repeat an invitation they have composed. Recently, I was along with some living history interpreters and found that one young man simply stood quietly and offered the comfort of a familiar insignia on his uniform - he portrays a surgeon's assistant and the insignia on his uniform meant help and healing to Civil War soldiers. The long and short of this post is: there is no textbook answer to your questions. Some folks prefer ritual while others of us simply try to be open and available. I do not believe that a true encounter happens by accident (in my opinion). Circumstances conspire to provide a forum for an encounter although we don't always know how we arrived at the "right" time and place.
