Subject: Revised design scenario

Problem Senario

Bill is 60 year old male. Bill’s son is amateur pianist living in LA. His first piano album(MP3 Version) was released last week. He already mailed out a copy to him, but it will take Bill another day to receive it. He also gave Bill the URL of that music record company to let him check it out online.

Bill uses the 56K dial-up modem to surf the internet, therefore sometimes it is really slow to download see a picture. He turns on the PC, clicks on the IE shortcut on his desktop and enters the URL in the box next to address ends up with a website called www.mp3.com. The letters on the screen is kind of small, then Bill stands up, walks to his study and grabs his glasses off the writing table. He is still not satisfied with the size of the print on the screen wearing his glasses. There are too many buttons in front of him. He see a artist name button at the lower left corner of the screen, clicks it, it takes him a while to see page pops up, it is not the artist list, but a ad instead. He closes that window and see a long list of artist name arranged in alphabetic order with photo next to each artist. He scrolls down the screen, see his son’s picture, click “view” under his picture, another window pops up again, it is an ad again.
Closing the window, he see the song list. It takes him almost 5 minute to download a 10 second long sample after he clicks on one of them on the list, another 5 minute for the 2nd 10 second long sample. He is getting impatient . He figures out it will take his entire afternoon to download the whole album, moreover, an ad window pops up whenever he click any button or links, this is really boring to him, so he decide to listen to it after he receives the CD from his son or there could be a better way to enjoy it.

Design Scenario- Bill enjoys his son’s works using his water-proof MP3(1) player in hot tub

Bill’s son bought him a water-proof MP3 player after he complained to his son how troublesome to listen to his album online. It also has AM/FM radio and plays CDs. Bill likes staying in hot tub for a while listening to his favorite music before go to bed every night.

It is 9:05pm now, bill leaves his living room for hot tub with his water-proof MP3 player in his right hand. He steps into the tub after feeling the temperature of the water with his left hand and lying against the tub. He plugs in the earphones and pushes down the ON/OFF button on the face of it and the LCD (2) turns on. It is bright enough for him to see in the dark under the sky. The sound of the piano fly into his ears. The default play mode is CD player(3). He scrolls the volume button to the left to turn the volume up. By pushing down button >> several times, he found his favorite one. All the buttons are big enough(4) with no necessary to operate wearing his glasses. Now, he is wondering how big the gap is between his son and maestros. Fortunately, he already downloaded the same clip played by Mozart this afternoon. He push down the MP3 button next to ON/OFF button, the list of the songs are shown on the LCD, using the up and down arrow buttons left to the LCD to select that exactly clip and hit play when it is highlighted. It is really a significant gap between them, bill talks to himself. It is time for him go to sleep, so he push the ON/OFF button again trying to turn it off. Unfortunately, he drops it in the water, thanks God, it is all right after being taken out of water.
