Heart of Football Beats in Dolmabahce

TURKEY, May 25, 2003 - The long-awaited day has arrived. Besiktas, who needs just one point to cement its championship in the 2002-2003 Turkish Super League on the 100th anniversary of its establishment, and Galatasaray are going to fight a historic football match today at Istanbul's Inonu Stadium.

Although one point is all the Black Eagles need, the goal is to win the match and triumphantly parade in front of their fanatical fans. Preparations were made to hold a giant feast at Inonu Stadium; however, the question "if they win" still lingers in the back of people's minds. If Galatasaray wins the match despite a five-point difference, it will deprive Besiktas of the feast and will carry the fight for the top slot into the season's final week.

Besiktas prepared for the derby by distancing itself from the outside world. Coach Mircea Lucescu refrained from making provocative statements, and the players wrapped themselves in a blanket of silence. The mood at Galatasaray was different. Coach Fatih Terim left his charges alone. His attitude was interpreted as a tactical maneuver to lull the team's rivals into a false sense of security. It was a refreshing change that neither of the teams got carried away with abusive rhetoric towards the other. Terim set a gentlemanly example by saying, "If Besiktas becomes the champion, we'll be the first to congratulate them."

Football fans are wondering how football stars such as Sergen, Ilhan, Pancu, Revivo, Volkan and Umit Karan will perform and want to know which player or players will leave their mark on the match of the century. Former Besiktas player Sifo Mehmet says, "Besiktas has already won this match in its mind," and Cuneyt Arman, formerly of Galatasaray, considers the comfort of the team in yellow and red to be an advantage.
