Subject: Ice and water barrier for open porch??

The latest roof project involves a roof of an open porch. My roofer is recommending ice and water barrier. I think he's nuts. The porch has the sheeting exposed so that when the roof is attached, you will see the ends of the nails. I don't see why I would need Ice and Water barrier on an unheated area. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

you will see the ends of the nails What nails? Roofing nails should only show if the roof deck is less then a 1/2 thick material.

I don't think he's nuts. In the commercial work I've done we been required to run it on all the overhangs around the building. Bottoms and gables. It makes sense to me to think that you have your snow melting on the main part of your structure over the warmer part of the roof and then as it hits the overhang where there is no warmth that is where the snow melt will start to freeze and what they call ice dams will most likely happen. In these commercial jobs we have been required to use it ONLY on the overhangs. These jobs also had nothing to do with roof pitch for the reason for using Ice and Water.

He's not nuts,
Tim Soth / A Roofer
