Subject: adding new roof to existing roof

We are building an extention ourselves. Uncertain how to cut the roof eave off so we can raise our wall of the extention. Will be marriaging the extention's roof to the existing roof.Do not want to compromise the existing roof.Does anyone have a suggestion? Truely would appreciate any suggestions!

If it ties into existing roof at different pitch
-If you have a composition roof I like to take my comp blade and cut the existing roof off horizontally about a foot up the roof above the wall that you will want to set your rafters on for your "extension".
-With the roof removed you will either have to rip a cut in the plywood to remove it to access the wall or if your lucky they used a more expensive product for the overhangs and have a 2' sheet of some roof decking that can easily be removed.
-Once that is removed you can knock out the bird blocks and set your rafters on the wall.
-If the "extension" is not living space you will need to replace the bird blocks that were knocked out.

If it ties into existing roof at same roof pitch
-You don't need to touch the existing roof. Just knock out the bird blocks and slip your rafters onto the wall.

There is no need to cut the rafters off. If it comes in at a different pitch you will need to trim some off the bottom of rafters so the don't protrude past the new rafters for a cleaner look or to be finished in a living space.

Hope this helps,
Tim Soth / A Roofer
