Depending how much of a bird's mouth you are cutting out of your board you'll want to use the ratio of 4 and 12 on your square. 1&3, 2&6, 3&9, or 1.5&4.5 for example. You'll have to figure out what you need depending on the size of the bird mouth. If you set a board out on the ground and imagine how it will set up on the wall then set your square on the board in these positions (using you building experience) you should be able to visualize how this cut will sit up on the wall. I usually delete the part of the birds mouth that would hang over the exterior wall. This usually entails ripping the part of the board that forms the overhang.
