Subject: hip roof ventilation

I am planning to finish off the attic in my house, which has a hip roof (all sides are the same size, and they come together at a peak). What is the best way to ventilate? I'm planning on putting in soffit vents and rafter vents, but there is no ridge for a ridge vent. Are a few small square vents at the peak adequate? It seems like they wouldn't help ventilate the areas that end in the hip ridges. Can I put ridge vents on the hip ridges? I'd appreciate any advice you can provide.

The only way a hip can be vented is if the roof has skip sheeting (shake roofs) installed on it. Even then I won't do it because they are prone to leak in high winds. You cannot cut the roof decking away from the hips without damaging the structural integrity of your roof framing. If you need to vent them it would be best to drill some holes in the top of each rafter where they meet the hip. Stop your cathedral ceiling a couple ft from the top so you'll have a few sq ft of attic space that you can install some vents on for ventalation.

Hope this helps,
