Subject: Flat Roof

Own a lake home in Minnesota. We have a flat roof about 10 x 15 that needs to be replaced. I am pretty handy and have lots of tools, but roofing is somewhat new to me. Can I do this, or should I look for someone else? If I can do this, what is the process of attack.

Concerns: We have noticed a mildewy smell, so we are assuming there is some rot or mold growth in roof area. Corrent roof is proably 25 years old.

Only time I have available to do this is about 4 days in October. Weather is cool here. Do we need some good warm days to have the roof set properly?

I was told flat roofs should not be insulated. True or false, and what should I do to keep the cold north winds out?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Please tell me who told you flat roofs should not be insulated? WHY? I'm in Washington an all roofs over living space get insulated.


As far as you being able to do it I can't vouch for you. Maybe you can, maybe you can't. I've seen some roofers in my life that can't even roof but that doesn't mean you can't. If you are putting on torchdown don't even consider it. Hire it out. If you are putting some sort of emulsion you might be able to try it. I have a lot of tools also but I know I can't do everything. Learn how to install the product that you are interested in installing and if you comprehend the process clearly then its up to you to give it a whirl. If you mess it up you wouldn't be the first homeowner that ever done such a thing and if you get it right you wouldn't be the first for that. If you do mess it up though you could spend a lot more then what it would have originally costed to do it the first time. At least its a small project, ideal for learning.

if you need a new flat roof then consider e.p.d.m rubber membrance it is more durable and you have no worries of seems coming apart.
