Subject: Over the EDGE

We had a new roof put on our home last month, Last even we had our first heavy rain. We noticed the edge of the roofing seems to stick out more then the old roofing and the water pours over the gutters. Is this something unforeseen that can happen?

If it is pouring over the top of your gutters the drain is plugged and they didn't clean your gutters out very well after the tear off. Give them a call and a respectable roofing company should solve this for you for free and immediatly.

OR is it the RAKE EDGE? On my home page I have this image. CLICK Its shows what a Rake Edge is. It sounds as if they didn't cut the old roof off to the Rake Edge and install this Drip Metal on the Rake. When that isn't done they have to hang their roof over a little bit more then the roof they are going over. It is not a standard procedure to install this gable metal over an old roof and the lowest bids never do it and some of the higher bidders don't concern themselves with doing it. If your house doesn't have Tails (Gutter Stops) on the Rake Edge the gutters usually hang past the Rake to compensate for the roof's overhang. When the new roof is installed w/o the old getting cut back the situation you are describing is pretty common. This is something that would have been written in the proposal if they intended to do it. If they didn't install it, they still didn't do anything wrong. I assume they pay less attention to detail then we do. I want every job I estimate on and its disappointing for me to see the lowest bid get the job. If you went with a middle to higher bids you got less attention to detail then your job deserved. Make sure to read and understand your contracts thoroughly. Our proposals state that we are cutting back the Rake Edges on our recovers.

Sorry to hear about your situation,
Tim Soth / A Roofer
