Subject: Gambrel roof framing on garage for second story

My garage is 12 x 24. I am going to remove the roof and build a Gambrel roof so I have room to have a workshop above garage. I rebuilt the 2nd story floor.
I am planing on going 6' 3" above deck and about 2' inboard where the roof angle is and then go up to about 9' at the center. I was planning to put rafters at the 6' 3" level for support, which will still give me enough headroom.
I am not sure on what material I should use 2x4 or 2x6 for all the framing. I was going with 2x4s at this point.
Also I am running a stringer at the very top of the roof but wasn't sure about running stringers at the angled part of the roof or how to make that connection. Could I cut the 2x4s with a cut which cuts the angle in half and put plywood pieces 3/4" on both or one side as a connection piece to nail or screw to both pieces?
That is the way I am planning using plywood or pieces of 2x8s.
Any help please
Rich
