Subject: Felt Paper?

The roof is finally on my new house. Rolls of felt paper are sitting at the construction site. The roofer said he didn't need to put it on because of the pitch of the roof. Why not?

It's not standard practice to omit the use of felt paper in the state of Washington. I called a manufacturer to ask them if they ever heard of such a thing and they confirmed that it was not required to install paper on pitches over 6/12. This doesn't mean that you county building codes allow such a practice. I don't know what state you live in but you should check with your county building inspector to see if what he did was permissible in your area. Even if it was I would think that he would have used it any ways. I have torn off roofs before and found no paper under them and the material came off like a sticker. It was bonded to the roof deck. It was like trying to remove torchdown installed without a base sheet. Let this be a lesson to all. Your contract should tell you a lot more then the roofing product they use but also the procedure they will follow installing the product.
