They both work. I charge $5 per foot to install ridge vent so it is usually cheaper to install the box vents you are referring to. I prefer ridge vent because of its looks. The best ventilation would be the installation of a power vent but then a licensed electrician is needed to install power to it. If your house is a full hip house you will probably need box vents because you will not have enough ridge on your house to properly vent it. Ridge vent cannot be used on hips.
