Subject: How to replace an old shingle roof with a tin one

I have an old house (about 100 years) with a leaky drafty shingle roof. I have decided that I want to replace it with a shingle one. Do I have to take off the old shingles, felt and wood then add 2x4's for which to attach the tin to, or can I just put down 2x4's on top of the old roofing. If I have to take off the old wood, how thick should the new wood be. and does it have to be particle board or can I get by cheaper with thinner plywood. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Peter Coyne

What type of metal? That makes a big difference. How thick is it? Is it standing seam or some of the panel applications that come in smaller pieces? Does the product have exposed or concealed fasteners? Does the roof system require batting? Is the roof deck skip sheeted now?

Maybe you will have to tear off and maybe not. I have no idea of what you are doing considering there are over 200 different metal roof systems out there. Have you looked at some of the architectural metals in the photo gallery. I have installed those right over existing cedar shake roofs. I need more input on your project. Tell me at least who the manufacturer of your product is and what they call it.

A Roofer
