In my experience, I find being even with the plate is decent. Something to consider is that in front of the plate the hitter will have slightly less of reaction time and against some pitchers they may get fooled by certain pitches. Behind the plate gives a little more time to react and also makes it a little easier to see pitches with movement. Preferably I would suggest discovering the best for the hitter and working from there. I take into account whether the pitchers balls break before or right at the plate. To me, there isn't necessarily a correct answer but one of comfort. Keeping the hands back will help your hitter from jumping out on pitches, that along with other mechanics. However, when bunting the hitter should be up in the box.
