Subject: Classrooms in the Armory - Summer Science Workshops

The State Armory of the California National Guard’s 160th Infantry, built in 1914, had fallen out of use in the 1960's as a military facility. The California Museum of Science and Industry used the cavernous center of the facility to house as temporary exhibit know as the "Space Museum." The West and East sides of the structure had a single floor of divided rooms. The museum used some of these rooms for administrative office space.

The remaining space was then converted to individual spaces containing a miniature zoo, a chemical laboratory, a photographic dark room, an electronics workshop, a computer installation, a biology research facility and other specialized scientific spaces which were adjoined by classroom spaces for the traditional teaching environment.

Soon thereafter, my parent’s gave me the news that I was to be sent to “summer school.” I sure wasn’t happy when I got the news, but after my first day, I couldn’t get ready fast enough and in the car for my next day of Summer Science Workshop. Every spring after that first summer, I eagerly anticipated the arrival of the new CMSI Summer Workshop catalog.

Every class provided me with some significant knowledge that I used later in life and remember and continue to use to this day. One of these classes ignited my interest in what became my professional career. Even some of the most basic scientific principles that I use from day to day, spark the memories of my first exposure to that knowledge in Summer Workshop.

Everyday, we would make time to visit one favorite exhibit in the museum for twenty minutes after lunch and then run to get to the afternoon session just in time.

The details that I want to share go on and on from here.
