The commute via Metro (subway) from GW to the NIH would be about 45 min - 1 hour because it's not on the same metro line. You would have to transfer trains to get there, so look for a place on the Red line Metro. I would recommend looking for a place in Bethesda or Chevy Chase (both DC suburbs - very close, safe, and fun neighborhoods), or something else on the red line. I actually did an IRTA fellowship at the NIH for 1 1/2 years and know the area and community fairly well. If you want, you can send me an email and I'll help you find a place to live and familiarize you with the area a bit.
