the grim reaper of the feline world was stalking his prey. his great cranium was lower than his shoulders, dark optics keenly fixated on the unsuspecting deer. black thorns perked forward with eager anticipation to the kill. a large paw came forward, carefully lifted over a small piece of dried fauna which would possibly crackle if stepped on, and then landed on a piece of hard-packed soil. it hardly left a mark of the beast's presence. closely-knit black stripes running down the length of his broad back and sides camouflaged him in the shadows. the deer would have no warning.

carefully now, oh so carefully. time became meaningless as the beast lay in wait, nostrils flaring in excitement, breathing the imaginary scent of live, red blood pulsing within the prey's veins. it seemed to take an eternity as an overly-curious young buck finally ventured near the tangle of vegetation, straying away from the others. it lowered its head to graze upon the lush grass, unaware of the danger that lurked.

he took another step, another paw lifting, with the power to knock a fawn off-balance with one single swipe. the deer paused, its head rising to peer around, sensing the terror. its nostrils flared, filled with the sudden scent of tiger, and its gentle, brown optics filled with fear.

before it could call a warning and leap away, there was an explosion of orange-and-black fury from the underbrush. unsheathed claws reached outwards, clinging to the young buck's body. pressing the advantage of his weight, it caused the deer to stumble, hooves flailing desperately not to go down. his great maw came around and grabbed at the neck, where life-blood pulsed so near to the surface.

there was no hope for the deer. warm blood dripped from the reaper's muzzle as he lay there contentedly, pink tongue grooming himself before gorging on a well-earned meal.
