Subject: the closest I ever got...

just a story I wanted to share, not that I want to start a whole "oh i saw John Kennedy's dog's cousin" or "I saw his neighbor's sister's husbands' house", or that kind of thing... but i remember a story I wanted to share.

It was July of 3 years ago and he had just passed away the week before, when I went up to NYC to visit my best friend. She was going to show me the World Trade Center and We decided to stop by John's neighborhood to see where he and Carolyn had lived and try to feel him, maybe and realize what had happened (we were still numb).

We walked around TriBeCa and stumbled upon a building with yellow tape still on it and gawkers all over the place and realized that was where he lived!!! Excitement and grief danced in my heart.
I ran to a local store and I insisted on buying a single red rose to lay on the stoop (though my friend was rolling her eyes.) I came back and was about to place it on the doorstep when a woman came out of the building and took a good, hard look at me. Then she said,

"You know, please don't put that there... John wouldn't have wanted you to. He would have liked you to give it to someone else and brighten their day, someone who needs it."

"You mean... you KNEW him?" was the swift (and stupid) reply that came out of my mouth.

She nodded. Then she put on her sunglasses and walked away, her head down. I stared after her. He KNEW her! Lucky HER!

I gave the rose to a Spanish tourist near the WTC after some broken Spanish and lots of sign language. But I left John a note I had written in the crack of the building near the bottom. I didn't care. I WANTED someone to read it and see it even if I wasn't supposed to !!
