Kirkle was born in a little, leavy home on the high branches of an old oak. His mother and father were Narra and Arlam Quickpaw. The Quickpaw family had lived in the great oak for generations, and in full contentment.

Then, one day, as Narra and Arulam were down on the forest floor, searching for nuts, they heard the sounds of a noisy rabble. Both scurried behind some nearby brush to watch. What came to view, astonished them both. A big band of rowdy searats, dirtied and torn, stumbled into the opening.

Arulam whispered to Narra, "Take our young son to Redwall and warn the dwellers!"

As Narra rushed toward the big oak, she snapped a twig. It was enough. The searats were upon Arulam in no time at all. But Narra, escaped. She maade it safely to Redwall where her son Kirkle is being raised. When she is asked of her husband, she simply shakes her head and replies "He is no more."
