Massive budget for Enga province
By ISAAC NICHOLAS
ENGA Governor Peter Ipatas has announced a massive 2009 budget totalling K125.85 million, which is expected to achieve maximum returns in terms of development in the province. The Enga provincial government budget comprises both national grants and total internal grants.Mr Ipatas said this would be the biggest budget handed down in his 12 years in office.Substantial increase in revenue in the 2009 budget is due to inclusion of a number of national grants that will feature in the development budget that includes K19 million for roads in Kompiam Ambum electorate, K20 million grant to the five districts (K4 million each) and another K10 million for development of Wabag market.
“We will continue to make education our priority and we have allocated K5 million to be spent on quality education,” Mr Ipatas said.“We are no longer subsidising school fees, as of last year; we have taken a new direction – K5 million for infrastructure and equipment for schools – a very important initiative undertaken since 1997,” he added.
Other priority areas of spending include the Wabag market (K10 million), Lia road construction (K1 million), provincial roads and bridges maintenance (K2,637,200), Enga Heritage Centre (K1 million), rural housing policy (K200,000), Enga AIDS Council (K100,000), Enga Women’s Council (K50,000), medical supplies purchase (K200,000), Enga rural health radio network (K150,000) and Enga Unicentre grant (K100,000).
Another 48 other projects have been identified and will be funded under the internal revenue totalling K39.593 million.
The projects will include Wabag Commercial Centre (K100,000), Wabag town sewerage system upgrade (K50,000), Enga tourism promotion (K200,000), Kopen secondary water supply project (K40,000), Education office relocation (K30,000), Laiagam water supply (K70,000), Kompiam gravel pit (K300,000) and Sirunki-Aepanda restoration programme (K100,000).Mr Ipatas said although the National Executive Council cancelled their planned meeting in Wabag, the provincial government had set aside another K400,000 for the NEC meeting which the Prime Minister said would be held in Enga this year.
He hoped Open MPs would work closely with the provincial government to carry out the projects.Mr Ipatas handed the provincial budget to Minister for Finance and Treasury Patrick Pruaitch.
