While I fear I don't feel qualified to answer a "Wolfowners' Why's" since in no sense of the word do I 'own' a wolf nor hybrid, I do have a theory on this.

Simply consider behavior here.

Whom do domestic dogs bond with? Humans. Why? Because in 'domestic' society (cities, farms), humans are 'top dog' (mainly because they have killed off everything else, but that's another matter...).

In the wild, wolves are. Wolves and dogs are social creatures, I think, and if they can't lead themselves, they will seek out and join those who can and do ... and while pumas and other creatures may, one-on-one, be 'stronger' than a wolf, they don't have the social drive to allow a domestic dog to bond with them.
