Subject: Handling chew-toy aggression...

Any suggestions on how to convince a half-grown pup that it may be ok to growl the other dogs away from a bone or pig ear, but it's NEVER ok to growl at Mommy over it?

My hands have been in his food since he was an infant...ALL food is hand fed by me, and he never growls while taking it from me...but, once in a while he growls if he thinks I'm going to snag a particularly good chewie. I have been taking him by the collar, holding him up till he drops the bone, and putting him on time-out in his crate for awhile. Along with a few stern, growling words of disapproval. After I let him back out, he is a gentleman for weeks at a time, but sooner or later he'll pull that stunt again. Is there a better way to discourage this behaviour?
