Subject: Crate Trained Chickens!

I thought I'd share this here as there are others who I've shared this with that find it absolutely hysterical...

With my little Silkie flock, they stay in the fenced front yard during the day where they can be watched and kept safe. When the sun starts getting ready to set they all gather at my front door and let me know very loudly "Its time to Come In!!" I open the gate (baby gate across the door) and they all file single file into a crate that sits about 4 feet inside my living room. In the mornings, I just open up the door and then open their crate and again - they line up and head outside for the day!! In the mornings if I'm late letting them out - Jovie, my roo, starts crowing to let me know!!!

On July 4th, I went to a BBQ with a few friends I had just met.... All of them "City People" and Very "Upper Class"... we were all sitting around enjoying the cool A/C. I commented how nice the A/C was as I didn't have any at home. I started getting some really raised eyebrows - What? You have no Air?? I then stated that its OK - I do have a window unit I use at night to sleep! And then I'm asked by a younger lady... "Whats a Window Unit?" and I was stammering to explain it... this was when I truly realized I was probably well out of my element!

A little later - Someone asked me about my birds making polite conversation... I forgot that I wasn't with other "chicken people" or even "country people" who would understand and I said something about my birds coming in at sundown. One of the ladies sits up straight - looks me up and down - asks... You keep your chickens in the house????
Without thinking or hesitating - my reply: Only the Silkies!
And then the real conversations started... looking back on it now - it was an absolute hoot!!! But at the time and in the company I was with... this probably wasn't the best conversation to have. I am sure every one of them still talk about "that crazy chicken lady" to this day!!
