Subject: Sick Birds

I am so ticked!!!! Last weekend I picked up a couple of Wyandotte hens - got them home and in the "isolation coop" - only to start hearing them wheezing and sneezing and not doing well at all!! I emailed the guy I got them from (who told me how healthy they were!)
His reply to me was that he did not know and the rest of his birds are fine! Yea Right!!

I started them on Sulmet and was feeding the medicated chick starter thinking it might have a little more in it for them.

Last night I thought they were sounding soooo much worse and I didn't know exactly what was wrong and became concerned that whatever they had might be airborne and could affect the rest of my birds. Boy was I right to be concerned!!!

I did go ahead and take one of them in to the vet today - found out she had chronic respority infection and also cocci. And yes - the resportory is a virus and yes - it can be airborne. So now I get to start watching the rest of my birds!!

They've both been started on Baytril (sp?) and she told me to keep them on the chick starter for the duration and also to keep them isolated.

I will never again bring birds home from those without a reputation behind them!! This is not the first time this has happened but it will be the last!!!
