Subject: Two and a half new books I just read..........

I got this really funny book, written by W. Bruce Cameron called "8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenaged Daughter". Now obviously it's written by a Dad for other Dads, but as a mom to two almost teens, I found myself LMAO all the way through! A few samples:
~"For parents, the purpose of punishment is to convince themsleves that despite evidence to the contrary, they are doing a good job raising their children. For teenagers, punishment is only an unpleasant reminder that they were caught-it isn't really going to impact their behavior on way or another."
~"A Father's Very Reasonable Policies on Prohibited Fashions: Instructions Regarding Bras and Underware.I understand the fact that it is now necessary for you to wear a bra. Well, this isn't completely true, since I don't really understand what a bra does, and I don't want to know! Don't tell me! I'm not asking!"
~"A Reasonable Father's Thoughts on Curfew". Teenagers don't comprehend the purpose of curfew, which has nothing to do with making sure they are home at a decent hour (or as they insist, to punish them for "being alive"). The sole purpose of curfew is to allow you, the father, to sleep at night. Yet no matter how carefully you overreact when your daughters stay out late, they just don't seem to understand."

The next book is written by Terry Ryan and it's called "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio". It's subtitle is "How my mother raised 10 kids on 25 words or less". In it the author tells all about her amazing mother who held together her large family through tough tough times in the 50's and 60's by entering (and very often winning) various contests. She used her natural born talents as a humorist and prose writer to win everything from candy bars to automobile(s). It is a truly inspiring and also very funny book. If you read it, let me know if you agree with me that her mother's "Round Robin" friends sound like the early days of the internet message boards, LOL! (ultimate "lesson" learned in this tale is found on page 113: "At that moment we knew that as long as we used our brains, we were not victims").

Last half a book? I picked up "Little Alters Everywhere" by Rebecca Wells. This is the FIRST book she wrote, before she wrote "Ya Ya's", but it has all the same characters. This one, however, is really a bunch of short essays written from many different character's POV. Many are written by Sidda, but we also get to hear Big Shep, Little Shep, Lulu, Bay, and Willetta, to name a few. I am absolutely loving this book so far!

Terry Ryan's book "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" has a website, and it's really cool.
